![]() ![]() ![]() The immediate motivation for writing this book, Amartya Sen explains at the outset, is to provide a ‘social and political understanding of India’ and restore the ‘long argumentative tradition in India’. The picture is,however, still deceptive …the book is, ultimately not argumentative enough as it does not address three of the most pertinent contemporary contrarian ideas and ideologies- caste (Dalit upsurge), globalization and environment/ecology. The brown disappears, and a clear azure reigns. From looking into a pool of muddy water, the camera suddenly wafts towards the blue sky as it were. ![]() 650 In the collection of essays in the book under review, Sen is at his finest when slicing an idea, displaying a sleight of hand in posing the same question differently, much like a photographer who likes to first take a picture upfront from a commonplace view and then takes a few measured, deliberate steps and gives a picture of the same subject from a devastatingly precise and alternative angle. Then every action we take is an expression of love, and love in action can only produce happiness. We are no longer the body, or the mind, or the soul, we are Love. When we master love, we align with the Spirit of Life passing through us. From the Toltec perspective, everything is made of love. The Mastery of Love is the result of the first two masteries. This mastery shows us how to change the dream of our life by changing our agreements and beliefs. The second is the Mastery of Transformation, which teaches us how to become spiritual warriors, and stalk our actions and reactions so we can break free of the knowledge that enslaves us. The Toltec said, 'Let us see ourselves with truth,' and they created a mastery just for awareness. It is the first step toward freedom, because we cannot be free if we don't know what we are, or what kind of freedom we are looking for. ![]() This mastery teaches us to be aware of what we really are. In the Toltec tradition, three fundamental masteries guide us to our true nature, which is happiness, freedom, and love. ![]() ![]() ![]() I am smart in the right way, in the right time, on the right end of globalization." ![]() We learn of her Southern roots and relationship with academia: "Smart is only a construct of correspondence, between one's abilities, one's environment, and one's moment in history. Here, then, is McGinniss' documentary-like chronicle of the case-alternating with the suspect's chatty, spookily banal reminiscences of his life up through the 1970s. And he asked McGinniss (The Selling of the President 1968, Going to Extremes) to write the full story, with first-hand coverage of the trial and first-person testimony from MacDonald himself. But, though MacDonald seemed an All-American model of the young husband/father/doctor/soldier, the Army investigators (epically clumsy in the case's first stages) believed he was guilty: hearings followed the charges were dismissed grand-jury proceedings began in the mid-1970s, largely because of the vengeance-crusade of MacDonald's father-in-law finally, in 1979, MacDonald (now a successful California M.D.) was brought to actual trial. and Green Beret volunteer-were found beaten and stabbed to death MacDonald, who was himself slightly wounded, claimed that a quartet of Manson-like cultists had overpowered him, killed his family. ![]() Carolina, the wife and two daughters of Jeffrey MacDonald-a young M.D. ![]() ![]() One of my favorite scenes in the book is watching her drag Freddy around London to look at all the historic buildings and museums. As for Kitty, while I don’t love her quite as much – she’s more of a stock Heyer heroine – I do still enjoy watching her fumble her way through high society. It’s so cute watching him grow more attached to her as they spend time together throughout the book. He basically agrees to the fake betrothal because Kitty starts crying and he doesn’t know what else to do to make her stop. But he’s an extremely kind-hearted, practical man who is too decent to ever cause a scandal. ![]() He’s a dandy, obsessed with fashion and clothes, and not particularly quick-witted or athletic. Freddy is such a refreshing male lead, so different from most Regency heroes. I love both Kitty and Freddy, and their arranged betrothal may be cliché but it’s such a fun premise. I’ve reread it at least three times since I discovered it two years ago, and I always come away from it with a smile on my face. All those issues aside, I’ll be honest: Cotillion is one of my favorite comfort books. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now, in The New American Table, Samuelsson takes you on a journey of the inspired food of the United States, his beloved adopted country. ![]() ![]() With recipes that range from elaborate entrees to simple snacks, I give an overview of American food as I see it and, hopefully, will provide a primer to navigate through an array of international influences to bring a world of flavor into your own home." -Marcus Samuelsson In his bestselling The Soul of a New Cuisine, Marcus Samuelsson returned to the land of his birth to explore the continent's rich diversity of cultures and cuisines through recipes and stories from his travels in Africa.
